With the rapid drop
in the cost of both production and screening technology,
South Asia is well on its way towards a documentary
revolution. We at Film South Asia (FSA) believe
this process has to be promoted further, which
is why Clearinghouse of South Asian Non-fiction
Films was established.
While the FSA festivals are held once every
two years, the Clearinghouse serves as a continuous
forum for the exchange of ideas regarding South
Asian documentaries and their propagation. The
Clearinghouse maintains an archive of films on
South Asia and is a means to inform connoisseurs
and lay people all over South Asia and the rest
of the world of documentaries produced in our
region.
It has two primary purposes:
1. To serve as an information database of filmmakers
and non-fiction films of South Asia.
2. To market documentaries of South Asia in the region and overseas.
The Clearinghouse of South Asian Non-fiction
Films functions as an affiliate of the non-profit
Film South Asia organisation. Its database consists
of details about documentary makers and their
films, works-in-progress, and other relevant information.
The marketing exercise of the Clearinghouse
is conducted in a transparent basis, relying on
written agreements for non-exclusive representation
arrangements with filmmakers for their films.
Documentary makers who may not want to be represented
by the Clearinghouse are not precluded from being
part of our information database. In general,
income from the Clearinghouse is used exclusively
for the purpose of promoting the cause of South
Asian non-fiction film.
The core of the Clearinghouse archive already
exists in the form of more than three hundred
documentaries which have been submitted to it
over the course of three FSA festivals. The Clearinghouse
will continue expanding on this archive and work
to deliver service as a resource center for any
kind of information related to documentary film
making and its status in South Asia.
