RETURNING TO THE FIRST BEAT (PHIR SE SAMM PE AANA)

Directed by SURABHI SHARMA | 85' | India

Hello

Synopsis

With the decline of the princely states, traditional systems of patronage began to unravel. Musicians began to gravitate to the rapidly growing colonial Bombay in search of new sponsors. Girgaon was one of the key neighbourhoods where the singers, patrons and audiences lived. The film revisits the sites in and around Girgaon, seeking to understand the musical legacy of this neighbourhood, even as it reimagines the documentary mode.
